Anna Britton (b. 1993) is an expressionist artist living in Washington, United States. Anna’s art seeks to integrate social problems and societal ills into expressionist art, as well as using abstract art as a form of therapy to heal from the recent chaos of the world.

About the Artist

Through intuitive stroke work and spontaneous color composition, I prefer my pieces to evolve organically as I work through them. Expression and intuition are my primary focus, which is often difficult to harness after years of trying to pigeonhole myself into academic art.

I work primarily in acrylic, pastel, and gouache. While mainly composing expressionist portraits and pieces reminiscent of the early 20th century expressionists, I frequently dabble in abstract work. I work under a similar method as the surrealists, preferring to start a work without any particular meaning or subject in mind, allowing the piece to grow organically and freely from the subconscious.

However, they tend to be very sensitive and are easily damaged by carelessness and those who want to take advantage of them. The trillium plant is hermaphroditic, having both male and female elements, and is a symbol of bisexuality in Mexican LGBT spaces. There is always the chance for euphoria and blossoming, even when there are so many in our society that seek to cut you down. "Tower of Blocks", 2021 Acrylic on Canvas. On display and for sale now at @evolvdesigncollective. This was a very early abstract I did during the pandemic. I may have even started it in 2020 and worked through 2021, and finally finishing it up in 2023. It is a play on organic and geometric shapes, fuzzy and flat textures, and natural and unnatural colors. Looking back on it now, I also assign both childlike and adult elements, bringing together bright toy blocks in a structural, metal building and skyline. It brings to mind a sandbox with a tower of plastic, painted blocks stacked by a child in a playground that is situated in the middle of an oppressive and monotonous city. "Toxic Chromium", 2023 Acrylic on Canvas. Now on display and for sale at @evolvdesigncollective. I think a lot of the sacrifices artists make for their art, usually from the emotional realm, but sometimes I think of the physical effects, especially historically. While chromium oxide green is mostly safe in its current form, it is technically toxic when inhaled as a dust or from repeated exposure. It also just has a very sickly, toxic hue to it that is indicative of sickness. There are other toxic paints, with some of the most toxic including lead white and Scheele Green, and famously the cadmium based paints. With synthetic hues, safety regulation, and knowledge of safe practices today, paint toxicity is typically not much of a concern, but has historically been a source of disease, madness, and death. Contrary to what you may have heard, lead, vermillion, etc. have been known to be toxic for centuries, but the risk to health was thought to be worth the result. "The Girl in the Thrifted Cardigan", 2023 Acrylic on Canvas. Now on display and for sale at @evolvdesigncollective. When viewing art for inspiration, I always come across paintings named things like "Woman with chignon", "Woman with Black Hat", "Girl in White Chemise". The titles are to the point and often the clothing or props are the easiest ways to identify these types of portraits. It typically points to a wealthy commissioner; props include Japanese parasols, silk robes, or flouncy hats. My wardrobe has always been mostly thrifted, at first out of financial need but now out of habit and frugality, so I now have a fondness for used clothing. When going to community college I wore cardigans two sizes too big, full of fabric pilling and odd discolorations, as well as mishappen, old skirts. "Berlin Double Exposure", 2023 Acrylic on Canvas. Now on display and for sale at @evolvdesigncollective. German expressionism is a huge inspiration for me, including German expressionist film. The sharp, jagged, violent shapes and line of sets and costume, the high contrast lighting, the emotive stage makeup, and the excess of then-modern cinematic effects like double exposure are all on display. The most commonly recognized German Expressionist film is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from 1920 (which also inspired another of my works, "The Blue Expression", also on display at Evolv), and it rightfully exemplifies all of the prototypical elements of German expressionism. I have been exploring clothing as abstract subjects in my art lately, rendering them with very little structure or form. The more I explore this, the more abstract it becomes. Sometimes I want to lay down a large swath of white to bring more emphasis to the subject of all of my works: the face. I don't work with red as a focus, so I wanted to try it with this piece. I find that I usually use red either as a minor supplement or I use it with a strong orange or pink leaning. It's not often that I use a primary red straight out of the tube like this. I departed from this kind of expressionist style with thick, blocked in strokes and simplified forms for a while. I did many simplified, flat forms like Judgment (2022), as well as very impressionistic and complex figures throughout 2021 and 2023, so it was nice to experiment with painterly forms again. I always experienced simultaneous messages that I was somehow too sensitive and quick to cry while also being too cold hearted to feel. As a result, I have become quite hardened and monotone, but often cry in private at things people may think insignificant. "She Drives the Big Car", 2023 Acrylic on Canvas. Now on display and for sale at @evolvdesigncollective. I spent a week doing bold, expressionist style portraits, and I think this is my favorite of the six I completed. Named after the David Bowie song "She'll Drive the Big Car" from his (in my opinion) underrated 2003 Reality album, the original song is about a former bohemian rebel who settled down with a boring husband and is living a domestic life so boring and bleak, she frequently contemplates plunging her car into the Hudson river. She turns up the radio a little bit louder, a little bit angrier, a little bit faster now, to drown out her thoughts of suicide. An acrylic on canvas master study of Egon Schiele's "Self-Portrait with Physalis" (1912) from last year. I do a lot of master studies and I use a lot of these techniques in my own art, but I am chronically unable to capture Schiele's technique to any degree. It may just be an issue of medium, but all my attempts to replicate his work falls very flat. It always just highlights to me the maturity of his work. I often paint over works that I am unhappy with, finding that the texture begins to build in interesting ways, and sometimes the paint underneath shines through beautifully.
