Poster Print - "Woman in Mourning"

from $9.50
I'm intrigued by the public displays of mourning that were expected of Victorians, particularly women. It was expected that those in mourning don clothing that symbolized their relationship with the deceased, and strict rules were in place for how long they wore mourning clothes, what kind of dye was used, and the overall style of dress. Mourning female widows were especially bound to these expectations. Portraits of mourners, both photographs and paintings, typically adhere to a dour and dark tone. Death has since become far less public, a much more private matter. It is considered tacky to overtly display your mourning, no matter how deep it cuts. Anything more than a passing mention is likely deemed "too much". The clash between the culture of just 150 years ago and today is fascinating. I wanted to create a portrait that might still be recognizable to the keen eyed as a widow in mourning, but ultimately her grief is unrecognizable to the majority of us without all the typical cues we are used to (e.g., a teary expression, a deep black dress and veil, a handkerchief to the mouth, turning the head away).
